According to Linux Kernel Developer Alan Cox “The big challenges facing Linux are outside the kernel: hand-held user interfaces, application software optimised for power, managing and updating embedded appliances, and Linux in the field.” Cox sees data protection, virtualization, and 3D graphics as defining features in the near term.
About Alan Cox
Alan Cox is a key figure in the history of free software. He installed a very early version of Linux on a machine at the University of Wales and used the experience to fix many bugs and create a stable networking subsystem. Known for helpful, informative posts on the Linux Kernel mailing list and the maintenance of his own stable forks of Linux Alan rose in stature and became known as “second in command” after Linux originator Linus Torvalds. He is currently employed by Red Hat, the world’s leading open source solutions provider.
